While travelling has ground to somewhat of a worldwide halt, our typically tourist run cities lie empty and quiet - perfect for a photographic adventure.
Grab your camera, and take the opportunity to revive your Instagram feed with gorgeous photos of your city in the absence of the usual hustle and bustle.
1. Take Advantage of Your Quiet City
Lockdown isn’t great, but an emptier, quieter and more peaceful city to wander around in sure is.
Take the opportunity to explore your usually tourist run inner city and appreciate it for its full glory, absent of the hoards of business people, tourists and noisy school children that usually make visiting the central business district a stressful -and to be frank chaotic- occasion rather than a relaxing day out.
Now is your time to shine, camera in hand, and to visit all the run of the mill attractions you know lie waiting in your city yet have somehow never bothered to visit in fear of either being crushed by packs of tourists or of yourself looking like a tourist (or both).
2. Go For a Day Trip
Yes, okay, taking a day trip away isn’t quite taking advantage of your own empty city, but hear me out.
If you’re fortunate enough to live in close proximity to a seaside town or cosy village, chances are that tourists visiting your city would normally flock here, and now they’re, well, not. Take advantage of this by grabbing your camera and heading out to a neighbouring village or town and basking in its emptiness and photogenic gems that you’ll more likely than not have all to your sweet self.
Snap away in the the winding alleys, at the typically family run beach (and a beach without screaming children - heaven) and treat yourself to a delicious (and super ‘grammable) pub meal.
3. Hit the Museum For Some Great Pictures
Museums and art galleries make for great pictures; the artwork, winding staircases and varying aesthetics of each room are what dreams (and perfect Instagram reels) are made of. The thing about museums however, is that there are always people everywhere -apparently they’re of some sort of ‘cultural importance’ and ‘of general interest’ to tourists- making photographing them in their full glory virtually impossible. Until now.
Now, in both the absence of large tourist groups and social distancing rules enabling only a smaller number of people to gain access into each room, art galleries and museums all over the world are emptier and quieter than ever before.
If art is your thing (and with a keen eye for a beautiful Instagram, I’m sure it is), check to see if your usual bustling museum is open, grab your camera and get clicking away.
4. Take Advantage Of Ample Space With Composition
There’s nothing quite like finding the perfect photo opportunity, only to realise that you can’t fit everything into frame without also including a stranger’s arm, the side of a handbag or a group of people in the distance (and accidental photo bombs are as frequently occurring as they are irritating).
With the streets more or less deserted (or at the least far emptier than usual), take advantage of the space around your object of focus and pay special attention to your composition. Take your time arranging your space, and relish in the fact that you’ll be getting great photos without an innocent bystander getting caught mid blink in the background.
